a few days into the past was this dream when......

An invitation was to me sent,
I accepted and then went...
to the old school and the grand hall,
if only there were words on the wall...
to explain why the woman chose
to invite me instead of those
with more affluence and wealth
she remained silent with stealth...
as she watched without speech,
certainly not there to teach.
decided since this isn't home,
I'd follow the old rules of Rome,
do as they do, watch their lead....
didn't work, no wisdom to heed.

The children arrive, bringing music and art
my queue to stand up and that's when I start,
down the hall past the kitchen whose door is high,
stairs have been removed I respond with a sigh
and ask how to get in from a passerby
"climb the wall to the top" was his reply
I did climb and asked "Can I help?" to the cooks there
The cooks were silent and back at me, glared

So, I climbed down and turned in the hall to the right
went to the room on the end, whose window shines bright
on the eastern wall was an oven...a turkey there did roast,
only the basting pan remained and the fat it did host...
Then smoke began rising to the top of the stove
a fire'd broke out...I turned and I dove
into the square cubed metal sheet
to avoid the explosion and heat
then went in search for help to extinguish
the fire from a man distinguished
who said "there's no fire here"
I raised my smoldering arm with no fear
and pointed and said, "yes, fire was there"
He turned away, he didn't care

Went back to the great hall to see if my work here was done,
but when I returned, familiar faces were none.
what happened to my sandals, they are gone
looked down at my feet, had purple thongs on.

I found my way to the outside
many people and youth there playing games.
I stopped to watch one game and it was horrific
Everyone standing crowded around the hill,
when from the top the commotion would tumble all
some it even killed
.
Made my way south
down the road away from Cin city
saw many familiar faces there,
waiting, waiting, what a pity...
I tried to be courteous to there plight,
skirting around the ponds, what a sight
was the grandmother sitting next to the babe.

I lost my balance, but caught myself,
as the brown bat fell from the shelf,
behind the back of the little girl outta site
I warned the grandmother of her plight
for which she was very grateful
not in any way hateful.

I turned and went back up the road
going North, the path now to hold
Past the strange games of men
looking for a way to get in the gym.
when I ran into my offspring anew,
who said come with me, I'll show you the view.

We headed East up the road,
round a bend and a sight to behold
where there was a shortcut made,
but I declined, to much mud in the way.
Made our way back the long way around,
so many ways and paths on the ground.

Joined a group of Elders entering the School again
we all stuck together from beginning to end
Two took a shortcut found in the hall...
no good, as the water started to fall
It lead nowhere in the end,
wasn't long and the two joined us again.

Made it back inside by closing time,
and still the robber barons stole us blind.
I finally found a familiar face
and asked when is our work done in this place?
What purpose was I called here to do,
was it just for the amusement of a few?
an affirmative nod that statement drew.

Running down the dark halls toward the closed front door,
surely there has to be more...
to life, than the schools of men
just a repeat of the song of when...
