This is my Journey in search of the restless spirit of the bones. I am leaving the research I have done as well as ongoing so that I can remember where I've been, where I am and hopefully lead to the healing and releasing of the/these spirits who never had proper ceremonial goodbyes/singing/releasing from the agonies endured. The following is what occured surrounding the vast are where I live today. Prairy
+++++++++++ Sharitarish (Angry Chief) ( Tribe : Pawnee ) c. 1790-1822. Sharitarish was one of the first Pawnee chiefs to encounter white expansion. In 1806, he also assisted the explorations of Zebulon Pike along the Republican River in present-day Nebraska. As brother of the Pawnee chief Tarecawawaho, Sharitarish was appointed to meet with president James Monroe and Secretary of War John C. Calhoun in 1822. On February 22, he gave a speech that subsequently became famous as he tried to explain why his people did not want to become "civilized". You love your country - you love your paople - you love the manner in which they live, and you think your people brave. I am like you... I love my country - I love my people - I love the manner in which we live, and think myself and warriors brave. So spare me then...and let me enjoy my country... Before our intercourse with the whites, who have caused such destruction in our game, we could lie down to sleep, and when we awoke we would find the buffalo feeding around the camp - but now we are killing them for their skins and feeding the wolves with their flesh, to make our children cry over their bones ++++++++++++++++++ Sky Chief (Tirawahut Lashar) ( Tribe : Pawnee ) fl. 1870s. During the Plains Indian wars, the Pawnees allied with the United States against their traditional enemies, the powerful Sioux Confederacy. Sky Chief was one of the main architects of the Pawnees' policy of accommodation; he provided scouts for the U.S. Army and guards for crews building the transcontinental railroad. In 1873, Sky Chief was leading one of the last Pawnee buffalo hunts in southern Nebraska when his party was ambushed by a large body of Sioux warriors. Sky Chief and about 150 other Pawnees were killed by the Sioux before the army came to the rescue of a few survivors. The site of the ambush later became known as Massacre Canyon. ++++++++++++++++++ REPUBLICAN PAWNEE VILLAGE Near here was a large permanent village of the Republican band of the Pawnee tribe which may have been occupied as early as 1777. On September 25, 1806, Lieutenant Zeublon M. Pike visited the village with a small party of soldiers. He was greeted by Chief Characterish and 300 horsemen. The American party found that the village had been recently visited by a large Spanish expedition from Santa Fe. Pike set up camp with rifle pits on the north bank of the river opposite the village. He persuaded the Pawnee to lower a Spanish flag and raise the American flag. After holding peace conferences between the Osage, Kansa and Pawnee, Pike served notice the land was now a part of the United States and the Spanish would be forbidden in the area. On October 7th, the American party defied the warnings of the Pawnee not to travel toward the Spanish settlements. He and his party were captured by the Spanish but were eventually released. A short distance downstream from the village site is one of the five "sacred places" of the Pawnee. It is known as Pa-hur' to the Pawnee or "hill that points the way" and as Guide Rock to the whites. -------------------- Never Give Up..... For there is always Hope, Always!
