I was reminiscing over some of the discussions and news that were covered on the old GC board and wondered what ever happened to Ward Churchill...I'll post a few recent developments.

Activist in court over tussle with officer
Assault alleged at regents meeting on Ward Churchill

By Felix Doligosa Jr., Rocky Mountain News
January 30, 2007
BRIGHTON - Activist Shareef Aleem was back in court Monday to fight for what he says is his freedom of speech.
Shareef Aleem, 38, appeared in Adams County District Court on a charge of second-degree assault for allegedly tussling with an officer at a Feb. 3, 2005, University of Colorado regents meeting on Ward Churchill.

The meeting was held a month after the professor's paper, comparing Sept. 11 victims to Nazis, ignited a media firestorm.

Aleem, a Churchill supporter, yelled at the event and expressed concern that students were not being allowed to speak, his attorney, Mark Burton, told jurors Monday.

The event originally was open to public comment but was changed on the morning of the meeting, Burton said.

"The Board of Regents (was)not going to have public comments," said Senior Deputy District Attorney Jim Colgan. "Everybody understood the rules, but (Aleem) wanted to talk."

Colgan said officer Greg Barthlome repeatedly told Aleem to quiet down. Aleem then attempted to grab the officer's badge and pushed the officer's arm away, according to the prosecution. The officer fell and suffered several injuries, Colgan said.

"(Barthlome) was simply doing what the regents wanted him to do, and he got assaulted," Colgan said.

The defense said the officer was the one who kept harassing Aleem. Barthlome allegedly kept touching Aleem's stomach and pulled up the defendant's sweater.

Barthlome fell after he tripped, Burton said.

"All he wanted to do is speak," Burton said. "He was very passionate of the rights of the students to speak."

The trial is expected to last four days. The case originally went to trial last year but ended in a hung jury.

Receptive audience greets professor
ChronicleHerald.ca, Canada - Jan 29, 2007

A lecture Saturday night at Dalhousie University in Halifax focused more on the topic of colonialism and less on the controversy surrounding the event’s main speaker.

A couple of hundred attentive students and community members showed up at the Marion McCain Building to hear what former University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill had to say about First Nations and colonialism in Canada, the subject of a new audio-documentary.

Mr. Churchill sparked a fiery debate after writing an essay comparing 9-11 victims to high-ranking Nazi Adolf Eichmann. He has also refuted allegations that he plagiarized the work of Dalhousie University professor Fay Cohen.

About a half dozen people quietly passed out literature to anyone interested in reading about questions surrounding Mr. Churchill’s academic conduct and his claims to native ancestry. But other than the small group of silent critics, most audience members in the Ondaatje Auditorium were receptive to Mr. Churchill’s talk, thanking him with a hearty applause and standing ovation as the night neared an end.

Mr. Churchill has appealed his dismissal from the University of Colorado. An investigative committee found him guilty of research misconduct and plagiarism last year.

Roland Chrisjohn, director of native studies at St. Thomas University in Fredericton, also spoke at the public lecture, defending his colleague and emphasizing his respect for Mr. Churchill’s "crucial" contributions to the world of academia.

"I find his work moving. I’ve found his activism inspiring," Mr. Chrisjohn said, adding "pseudo academics" are often jealous of Mr. Churchill’s accomplishments.

"Suppose Ward Churchill isn’t an Indian – so what?" he asked. "Are only women permitted to have opinions . . . on women’s issues? Are only chickens permitted to judge egg salad sandwiches?"

Mr. Chrisjohn said the bottom line is that Mr. Churchill should be judged by the value of his work on indigenous studies, not on how much native blood runs through his veins.

But 21-year-old university student Julia Ebell, who sat with a small group of friends, said her main concern is that Mr. Churchill "plagiarized from a member of the Dalhousie academic community."

Ms. Ebell said while she does respect Mr. Churchill’s advocacy for native rights, she finds it odd that he was invited to speak at Dal, where he has been accused of plagiarism. "There are several people in the Dalhousie community and in the area who could have spoken about this," she said.

Mr. Churchill told the crowd he has received thousands of racist e-mails, mostly from white males, in response to the constant controversy.

Academic Mis-conduct?

Wow! Now That Really blows my mind Ward, may I call you that?

Now think, think: real hard, isn't the SYSTEM that claims Mis-conduct against you...Hmmmm, are they not also responsible for teaching successive generations the tools of pyschology as ASSIMILTATION? Did they also create the UNLAWFUL JUDGES AND LAWYERS, WHOM EXIST: AS PRETENDER'S: WHOM ARE NEITHER CAPTAIN OR FIRST MATE? Something about...ADIRMALTY-COMMERCE-MARTIAL LAW FLAGS? I guess they must not be teaching the truth, as the reality is harder to bare they are incapable of CORRECTION.

MODERN EDUCATION MODELS:

THE NAZI TEACH'S YOU TO LEARN TO HATE!

THE FACIST TELLS YOU TO LEARN: OR ELSE!

THE IMPERIALIST TEACH'S THE PRISON IMPLICATIONS IF YOU DON'T!

THE RELIGIOUS TEACH.....STILL HAVEN'T FIGURED THAT ONE OUT, COULD BE REPRESSION SUPRESSION TO DEEPEN OBSESSION!

Where Not The Last Few Hundred Generations Taught To Harm, Lust, Greed For The Glory Of The CIVILIZED: Taught by COLONIAL UNIVERSITY'S?

Is there a true Sovereign School that leaves out the COLONIALISM? Then why do COLONIAL Schools' leave out the Sovereign's?

Logic and Reasoning both agree: You Have Only Participated In The Educational Jurisdictional Scheme of the Great Forgetting....Or Is That A Thing Called Progress?

Ward, seriously though, I hope you are well, and strong for the next round of darkness to come across the Land of the Original People, you will see your warnings wasted on those whom could stand to benefit the most, and I will be here to sit by you when none of it makes any sense to any one....

One Last Thought Ward: BLOOD QUANTUM IS ONLY PROOF OF A GENECIDE OCCURING.....AllOurRelations....The GhostChild.

Ward Churchill Video tape

I'm co-host of a Denver media watchblog called the Try-Works, which, I'm proud to say has drawn a little blood here and there amongst our locals. One of our primary foci has been the Denver media's neo-Stalinist smear of CU Professor Ward Churchill.

As you know, though Ward Churchill drew the right-wing's ire for questioning American exceptionalism, it was understood that attacking him for exercising his right to free speech might raise some uncomfortable questions. As such, the local media's coverage immediately took on a viciously personal bent, the main charge being that Professor Churchill wasn't a "real Indian."

Only two pieces of evidence have ever been offered that Churchill is an "ethnic fraud" -- whatever that means.

1. A genealogical study in a June 8 Rocky Mountain News article, performed by an incredibly unqualified team made up of two anti-Churchill bloggers and a New Jersey cop. ( http://...com/byp32)

2. The word of several people affiliated with a splinter offshoot of the American Indian Movement -- primarily Suzan Shown Harjo, Vernon Bellecourt and Carole Standing Elk -- who have a longstanding feud with Professor Churchill. Professor Churchill (along with Russell Means, John Trudell, Robert Robideau, Glenn Morris, George Tinker and others) have earned their lifelong enmity by contending that members of this group brutally raped and murdered a young American Indian activist. ( http://...com/3av3sp)

Professor Churchill, on the other hand, has videotape of the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee council discussing his membership application and affirming his every word. Videotape tape the UKB mailed Professor Churchill along with his enrollment card. Videotape which the Denver media knows of, and has chosen to ignore as inconvenient.

But we have made a copy. And we have posted relevant clips to the Internet, accompanied by a breakdown penned by Try-Works member Charley Arthur.

Just click here: http://...com/36uat6

For those of you who support Professor Churchill (or who just have a passing interest in journalistic integrity), enjoy.

For the inveterate liars among you -- especially among the Denver local media -- we're going to be having a lot of fun at your expense. Do drop by.

Sincerely,
Benjamin Whitmer

Prairyearth- 04-21-2007
Hi greentreee,
I saw the Truddel doc a while back as well. Like you, I had never heard about the Alcatraz take over/demonstration. That documentary was very enlightening.

I will try to fix the links soon. Today though I think I will go visit the buffalo and must prepare for the big rolling thunder that will be roaming the range later today.

Local Republicans question regent's vote in Churchill case

NICOLE FORMOSA
summit daily news
Summit County, CO Colorado
July 31, 2007

SUMMIT COUNTY - Local Republicans want Summit County's representative on CU's Board of Regents to better explain her reasons for casting the lone dissenting vote against dismissing controversial professor Ward Churchill.

The board voted 8-1 last week to fire Churchill, a tenured professor of ethnic studies, after determining he had "engaged in acts of research misconduct, including fabrication, falsification and plagiarism," according to a report from the regents.

Regent Cindy Carlisle, a Democrat who represents Summit, Eagle, Clear Creek, Grand, Gilpin and Boulder counties, was the only regent who didn't support Churchill's dismissal.

"If Ms. Carlisle could not vote to fire Professor Ward Churchill despite the overwhelming evidence of his academic fraud and misconduct, we would also ask her to explain what circumstances would lead her to recommend that a tenured faculty member be fired," said Summit County GOP chairwoman Debra Irvine.

Carlisle told the Associated Press last week that she felt the regents should have accepted the advice of the Privilege and Tenure Committee, which voted 3-2 in May to suspend Churchill for a year without pay.

Irvine said she didn't feel that was an adequate justification and called for Carlisle to issue a public explanation for her decision, which defied CU President Hank Brown's recommendation to dismiss Churchill.

Carlisle did not return a phone call seeking comment.

An e-mail sent to Carlisle on Tuesday returned an automated response from the CU Board of Regents saying in part they believe their decision serves the best interests of the University of Colorado and its constituents.

Irvine said the request for more explanation is a non-partisan issue, and pointed out that U.S. Rep. Mark Udall, a Democrat, also supported Churchill's dismissal.

"This has nothing to do with party (affiliation) at all. We're just curious why she had the dissenting vote. What more egregious act could he have done to send her over the edge to be that ninth vote?" Irvine asked.

Churchill's first came under fire after writing an essay that likened some 9/11 victims to Holocaust organizer Adolf Eichmann. The regents said their decision to fire Churchill wasn't linked to those statements and recognized his right to make controversial political statements.

The academic investigation focused on whether Churchill engaged in conduct below minimum standards of professional integrity, the regents' report said.

Churchill's lawyer has filed a lawsuit against the university last Wednesday, saying the school retaliated against him for exercising his freedom of speech.
