The Defenders of the Black Hills is a group of volunteers, without racial or tribal boundaries, whose mission is to ensure that all of the provisions of the Fort Laramie Treaties of 1851 and 1868 are upheld by the federal government of the United States.

In doing so, these volunteers are also upholding the Constitution of the United States which, in Article Six, states that "treaties are the Supreme Law of the land."

Until the Treaties are upheld, the actions of the Defenders are to restore and protect the environment of the Black Hills and the surrounding Treaty Area to the best of their ability......

This link is to an excellent CERCLA/Superfund primer, download it. It should be apparent to you what is wrong with the CERCLA process as this relates to the abandoned uranium mines and the health crises in Rock Creek (Bullhead, SD). This health crises was not considered during the remediation process, the US Forest Service had consultation meetings with the SRST Tribal Historic Preservaton Officer and used this as justification for continuing the CERCLA process without including the health crises in their Risk Assessment.

The following link describes the level of incompetence of our state in managing environmental progams funded by the US EPA. We were very fortunate to have met the deadline for the commenting period. Charmaine White Face and I made comments that caused them to begin monitoring all of the western South Dakota rivers for radiation contamination. Charmaine's comment begin on page 187 and my comment start on page 190 of the pdf file. If you read into it, you will see the cut and paste job and the "fill in the blanks" attitude of this department. LOL

The following article describes clearly the same situation as is currently occurring in the Custer National Forest with respect to the uraniferous lignite radioactive contamination of the environment. This gives me hope since North Dakota didn't wait for CERCLA to cleanup their abandoned uraniferous lignite mines. Instead they just reclaimed these mines using their own funds and established over 120 groundwater monitoring stations near these reclaimed mines.

Yes, tis true, some of those links arent working. I have notified igmuska who works with the Defenders of the Black Hills and am waiting to see if there are other links or articles available.

As we well know that when working on the peoples behalf trying to get those responsible to clean up the toxic waste they left behind, or when we try to prevent more toxic mine development from taking place, web sites and links go disappearing.

We will keep trying cause we know to always have hope and never, ever give up.

Special Meeting about Uranium
and
Film Showing of ‘An Inconvenient Truth’

A Special Meeting will be held this Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, from 1 - 5:00 PM regarding Uranium development in the region. A film entitled “The River That Harms” will be shown followed by a discussion.

The meeting will be held in the St. Isaac Jogues Church coffee room, next door to the Mother Butler Center, 221 Knollwood Dr., Rapid City, SD. A potluck meal will follow.

A showing of the Al Gore film, “An Inconvenient Truth” was previously scheduled for Feb. 1st but was cancelled due to the weather. The film will be shown at 6:00 PM following the Pot luck meal. The meeting and film are open to the public at no charge.

“Uranium Summit to be held at SDSM&T on March 27”

“Univ. of Michigan Nuclear Engineering Professor Keynote Speaker”

Rapid City, SD -- Bringing an impressive background of more than 30 years of research and applied experience in radiation detection and protection, Professor Kimberlee J. Kearfott, Ph.D., from the University of Michigan will be the keynote speaker at a Uranium Summit on March 27, 2007, at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.

Professor Kearfott is currently a member of The National Council on Radiation Protection (NCRP) Scientific Committee, and is certified by the American Board of Health Physics and the National Registration of Radiation Protection Technologies. She graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Doctor of Science in Nuclear Engineering and Medical Physics, and from the University of Virginia with a Masters in Engineering in Nuclear Reactor Safety.

She has held positions on

* the Board of Directors of the Health Physics Society (a society dedicated to radiation protection);
the American Nuclear Society;
* the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC) Enhanced Participatory Rulemaking Workshop on Radiological Controls for Decommissioning of Nuclear Reactors;
* the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Subcommittee on Radiation Cleanup Standards of the National Advisory Council for Environmental Policy and Technology
* was a consultant on low-level radiation health effects to the NRC's Advisory Committee on Nuclear Wastes;
* has performed a variety of applied health physics tasks for numerous medical and industrial radiation users; and
* has been an Associate Editor of the Health Physics Journal since 1991.

Professor Kearfott will be the keynote speaker for the Fourth Uranium Summit planned by Defenders of the Black Hills. Two other national environmental organizations, Indigenous Environmental Network, and Western Mining Action Network, as well as the American Indian Science and Engineering Society’s Student Chapter at SDSM&T are also cosponsoring the event to be held on Tuesday, March 27, 2007, from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM in the Ballroom of Surbeck Center at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, 501 East St. Joseph St., Rapid City, SD.

The Uranium Summits were triggered from plans for future uranium mining, as well as the lingering effects of hundreds of abandoned uranium mines and prospects left from the 1960s and ‘70s mining boom in Wyoming and South Dakota. To increase the public’s awareness of the effects of uranium development on human health and the environment has been the goal of the three non-profit organizations and the student chapter cosponsoring the event. The informational meeting is open to the public. Lunch will be served.
