For more than a thousand years the Maya were Lords of a vast jungle empire in what is now known as Mexico and Central America and were without equal in their understanding of engineering, construction, astronomy, mathematics and the use of curative herbs and massage. My fascination with the Maya people began 14 years ago when I traveled to Belize, Central America to help poor children in San Antonio, a Maya Village in the jungle highlands and met their respected leader, Maria Garcia. During the first day I fell in love with their culture and pristine rain forests. Over the years I have made well over 20 trips back, each time deepening my love and respect for this ancient culture.
A previous trip enabled me to meet and videotape the healing massage of four Maya healers or Curanderos in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. On a more recent trip the goal for my journey was more specific. Jennifer Hicks of Big Sky Somatic Institute, in Montana, asked me to share the Maya remedy for infertility in our upcoming Maya Temple Massage class at their school in August. I will be introducing the infertility work at that time.
In preparation for this story and possible follow-up of a more in-depth class on Maya massage for infertility, I was able to interview, observe and or receive an abdominal massage for infertility from Dr. Rosita Arvigo, Juvencio Cantu, Jerome Coc and Beatrice Waight, all well-known Maya healers, individually at four locations in the Cayo District of Belize.
Cultural Perspectives
Fertility experts in the U.S. and today's Maya healers agree on the primary reasons for infertility in men and women, although they disagree on the probable causes and treatment protocol.
For example both agree that a man's sperm needs to be able to travel from his testes out through his penis without any blockage. Both sides agree that a man's reduced sperm or poor sperm quality is a cause for problems. Weak sperm swimmers sink before they reach the fallopian tubes and sperm swimmers with deformed heads may not be able to pierce the zona-pellucida...the egg's hard protective coating.
The Maya healer knows that either men or women can be infertile. More than 4 million couples in the U.S. are infertile and among these couples an estimated 40% of the men are infertile. One way the Maya healer knows if a man is fertile is by having the man urinate on the ground during a warm day. If ants are attracted to the urine soaked spot the urine is sweet and therefore the man's sperm is considered healthy.
Maya healers and U.S. fertility experts know that hormonal imbalances can interfere with egg follicle development and ovulation. The woman's reproductive tubes must be clear. An egg needs to travel from the ovary down one of the fallopian tubes and when fertilization has occurred, the embryo must then move from the fallopian tube to the uterus for successful implantation. Both sides agree that cysts and fibroids and other obstructions diminish a woman's ability to conceive.
Maya healers and U.S. fertility experts know that the new embryo will die soon unless a nurturing uterus welcomes it. The embryo needs a thick, friendly lining with a rich blood supply to snuggle into and call home. Maya shamans and reproductive professionals in the U.S. agree that uterine structural problems of any kind can prevent an otherwise successful implantation.
Different methods emerge in diagnosing and treating infertility. The U.S. gynecologist or reproductive professional can use sophisticated, state of the art imaging equipment to discover a displaced uterus while the Maya healer uses knowing touch. The U.S. physician uses surgical means for correction while the Maya healer uses uterine massage to realign the uterus. Maya healers use a three-part recipe for healing infertility. The healer believes that without prayer, plants, and massage, infertility can not be cured.
Prayers, Pulses & Rituals
The Maya healer believes that prayer is the most essential part of the healing treatment. An ancient recorded prayer for infertility can be found in the Biblical reference at Genesis 20:17, when Abraham prays that God will remove a curse and allow the king's wives to conceive. Abraham's prayer is answered. Current Mayan culture retains much of its ancient wisdom and rituals, while embracing the early teaching of Christian missionaries.
The Maya healer believes that copal incense must be burned in an appropriate incense burner to clear the air of bad spirits and invite good ones to intervene. Copal smoke is also symbolic of prayers for healing that float toward God in heaven.
Some Maya healers talk to and attempt to enlist the nine benevolent spirits to help them determine the cause of infertility. Maya healers say these spirits can be compared to the Catholic patron saints. These spirits may appear in a dream or vision to clarify the kind of treatment needed or offer clues as to what other sort of divination tools or charms should be consulted. Many Maya healers are Christians and pray to God and his son Jesus to help them understand how to treat the patient for infertility.
Beatrice Waight, a pure blood Yucateca Maya healer, was my primary teacher during my recent stay at her jungle home in Belize. During her prayer for healing for a patient from the U.S., she said..."Meditate on white lights, white flowers and white angels." While her patient meditated on these thoughts Beatrice prayed for a light of clarity for the choice of treatment...the acceptance of the spirits for her offering of imaginary white flowers and she invited white angels to come help her and her client.
Traditional prayer is offered by the Maya healer, while three leaves are formed in the shape of a cross and placed over the right wrist, forehead, heart and left wrist to take a pulse. The three leaves are rue, basil and marigold and are referred to by the Maya healer as the sisters of mercy.
Maya healers begin to diagnose infertility or any other illness by taking a prayerful radial pulse reading. They are experts at reading more than twenty pulse sites and are aptly known as Pulse Doctors. With prayer and pulse reading they are able to tell if you are suffering from fear, unforgiveness, sadness, tension, conflict and more. Spiritual insight helps the healer assess the patient's emotional, spiritual and physical condition and decide what the treatment will be.
For example Beatrice told me about a young patient from the U.S. who wanted to have a child, but was unable to conceive and had not experienced menstruation in six years. Prayer and pulse reading revealed to Beatrice that her patient was unhappy and that until the source of her unhappy life was known and dealt with the woman would remain infertile. Her patient confessed in tears that her husband was insistent that she join him racing around the country on business when her heart was at home. Beatrice urged her patient to confront her husband on this matter. The unhappy wife was able to stay home and conceived within 2 months.
Ancient Maya healers trusted the Quetzal bird to carry their prayers to God and granting visions or dreams (was and still) is one of God's ways of responding. To this day the elegantly plumed Quetzal bird is revered by Maya healers and the Maya culture in general.
A vision might suggest placing frogs around the home of the infertile couple. Frogs are the Maya symbol of prolific procreation. We say multiply like rabbits but Maya might say, multiply like frogs. And we know, newly born frogs or tadpoles (also known as polliwogs) have long tails and look like over-sized sperm. I find this a remarkable coincidence since the ancient Maya healers had no microscopes to see sperm.
A vision might suggest the prayerful consulting or reading of egg yokes, cloud formations or the casting of beans or pebbles to determine the appropriate treatment for infertility. This may sound strange, but consider the casting of lots (kind of like drawing straws) in the Bible for very important decisions like who would take the place of Judas as one of Christ's disciples.
These prayers and means of divination are still used as reliable clues to the treatment protocol for all kinds of maladies. Unique Maya methods are effective and perhaps it is because the patient believes that the healer is connecting with and enlisting spiritual forces to help diagnose and cure the emotional, spiritual and physical problem.
Herbs, Plants & Spiders
Before the heat of the day Beatrice showed me some healing herbs basking outside her healing hut. She fondled the leaves with a soft touch and spoke of them as a proud, loving mom adoring her own small children. These were more than plants... they were like adopted members of her own family.
A friendly frog regularly stood guard near the community family shower head. During my several days with the Maya family the neighborly frog would greet me along with a two-inch spider circling the outhouse toilet seat. I flicked the spider away three times, but each time it returned more defiant than ever...darting in and out from under the toilet seat. I considered killing it but admired its courage and determination and asked myself "What would the Maya do?" Cultural insight told me that they would live and let live.
The Maya respect for nature is legendary. For example before the Maya cut down a tree they will tell the tree and God what they plan to do with the lumber and explain who will benefit from its death. Then a prayer of thanksgiving is given before lovingly harvesting the tree. This same reverent or spiritual approach is used in gathering herbs. The Maya healer will speak to the plant, sharing the intended use, who will benefit from its death and offer the prayer of thanksgiving before plucking its roots, stems, leaves, flowers, bark, etc.
My Maya teachers told me that every Maya healer has his or her favorite team of herbs to treat patients. Sometimes the preference is based on how readily available an herb might be or whether or not another herb can be used as an effective substitute.
Maya healers know when and where to look for their herbs. Not only do they know scores of plants by sight, but even know exactly when the herb is ripe for picking and how to boil, blend, squeeze, beat, grind, dry, age and cool it. Some herbs must be harvested the night of a full moon, others at dawn and some after the rain. Some herbs come from wet soil or mud, some from dry soil, others from highlands, some from lowlands, some from lakes, rivers or even caves.
A Maya healer knows when the infertile patient or client is most receptive (sometimes during menstruation) to an herb treatment.
Keeping herbal secrets is easy for the Maya healer. Herbs and the preparation of them are their confidential stock-in-trade. Some healers do open up about some herbs and their preparation and yet clam-up about others. For example, I wanted to know what was in their tonic labeled Belly-Be-Good, for ulcers, gas and infertility for men. The healer refused to share the secret ingredients. I offered to buy two bottles in exchange for the information. After all I said, "Who would take a powerful medicine without knowing what was in it." Even after my purchase the healer would not tell me what was in those little dark bottles.
On the other hand, Beatrice openly touted a concoction of fertile eggs beat in orange juice with drops of vanilla for HIV, anemia and infertility in women. She also suggested infertile women eat a particular type of jungle mushroom three times a day and prescribes and administers skunk root, ginger or mango leaf tea for treating a prolapsed uterus and infertility. An herbal vapor cleansing of the vagina and uterus works wonders for purging the womb and Beatrice thinks beet juice amaranth, wild yam root and mother wart are effective treatments for infertile men or women.
According to Beatrice, the womb or uterus collects solids and toxins like a sponge or septic tank and unless it is purged or drained and in proper alignment it will never be fertile enough for growing a baby. "Cysts, fibroids and polyps can be dissolved with herbs and vapor baths and uterine massage and herbal teas break up clots in the uterus at the onset of menstruation", she says.
Massage
Before massage the healer gets rid of any bad vibes with the burning of Copal incense and or by wearing a protective amulet and or by placing a vase of water under the massage table or altar to absorb bad energy.
The client or patient is lying unclothed under a sheet, face-up. While praying, the Maya healer monitors the pulse while applying the three sisters of mercy and praying for the white lights, flowers and angels for reasons described earlier. The Maya healer may blow on the patients forehead to clear away an unfriendly or confusing spirit.
The massage may begin with rhythmic strokes to the neck and shoulders and then move down to the abdominal area. The healer is facing the patients feet and with flat hands applies deep pressure below the lowest rib toward the pubic bone. These deep pressure strokes are almost
vertical. The knowing hands of the Maya healer feels the position of the uterus and determines whether it is in the proper position. If not, the healer will begin to massage the uterus toward its proper position. The Maya infertility healer also lifts the skin just above the woman's pubic bone toward the navel. This upward fingertip tug tells the healer if the uterus needs to be manipulated. The massage movements vary depending on the severity of the uterine dislocation. Sometimes the prolapsed uterus can be aligned in one treatment and sometimes several treatments are required. This Maya know-how only comes with many years experience as a midwife.
The Maya healer massages down into and across the hallow just above the pubic bone to treat infertile men. Also deep upward pressure is applied just above the pubic bone. The lumbar region, especially over the sacrum is massaged with deep circular pressure.
It seemed providential to learn that my primary teacher, Beatrice Waight, shared her abdominal and infertility massage methods with Dr. Lupita Arvigo, the most well known international advocate of Maya uterine massage. Dr. Arvigo is the impressive author of: My apprenticeship with a Maya Healer-Sastun, Rain Forest Remedies, Rain Forest Home Remedies and a picture pleasing volume titled Spiritual Bathing. Lupita Arvigo also studied herbs and Maya abdominal massage with the celebrated Maya Shaman, Don Panti in San Antonio, Belize.
Arvigo told me that massaging the low back is as important as the abdominal massage. She gave me an abdominal and back massage in her jungle refuge at Cha Creek. Her massage involved deep circular pressure over the sacrum and rocking motions using two hands to push half of my back and then hips back and forth from the opposite side of her massage table. Her movements were very similar to those demonstrated by her venerated colleague Beatrice... except that Beatrice included a vigorous grasping and shaking of skin along the lumbar strap muscles.
Wondering womb/symptoms and causes
The Maya believe that dislocation of the uterus is the main reason for many health problems and is the predominate cause of infertility. Maya healers look for the following prolapsed uterus symptoms and causes.

7. Painful ovulation
8. Varicose veins of the legs
9. Tired weak legs
10. Numb legs and feet
11. Low back pain
12. Endometriosis
13. Uterine polyps
14. Uterine fibroids
15. PMS depression
16. Uterine infection

2. Poor professional care during pregnancy
3. Carrying heavy burdens just before or during menstruation
4. Wearing high heels
5. Running on cement or asphalt surfaces
6. Injury to tailbone or sacrum

9. Carrying young children on the hip for prolonged periods of time
10. Modern life
Beyond Infertility
Mayan abdominal massage has also proven to be a beneficial treatment for men and women beyond infertility issues. I believe this is due to its stimulating effect on the lymph nodes and lymphatic flow located in the abdominal area and the correlating benefit to immune function
