Catalonia vs. USA match
La Federació Espanyola de Futbol ha decidit vetar el partit amistós entre les seleccions de futbol catalana i dels Estats Units previst per al 14 d’octubre del 2007. Els seus directius han apel•lat a una incompatibilitat –falsa– amb els calendaris de la FIFA.
La notícia ha provocat un profund malestar a Catalunya, perquè sembla respondre exclusivament a una mesquina prohibició sense fonaments destinada tan sols a no permetre cap expressió nacional de Catalunya. Ja se sap: Espanya considera que la Nació Catalana no existeix, ni ha existit ni permetrà mai que existeixi.
Alguns diaris de Madrid en parlen molt, òbviament en contra, i exigeixen a les autoritats esportives espanyoles mesures contundents per evitar-ho. És ben sabut que la majoria d’esportistes d’elit “espanyols” tenen origen català. Però el govern de Madrid no tan sols prohibeix l’existència d’equips nacionals catalans, sinó que obliga als jugadors a jugar amb les seleccions esportives espanyoles (fins i tot en contra de la voluntat del jugador) sota l’amenaça de retirar-los-hi el permís de joc i acabar. D’aquesta manera, la seva carrera esportiva. D’això se’n diu polititzar l’esport.
Tot esdevé encara més grotesc davant la consideració que aquest partit no deixa de ser un amistós. Com tants altres que se celebren a diversos punts del món.
Les autoritats espanyoles han demostrat un gran zel quan s’ha tractat d’evitar el reconeixement internacional dels equips catalans o dels jugadors catalans. Que ara tornin a vetar el match USA-Catalunya evidencia de manera més descarnada els greus obstacles que ha d’afrontar l’esport català quan pretén obtenir una projecció externa.
La resposta del govern català ha estat directa. La secretària general de l’Esport ha instat la Federació Catalana de Futbol a disputar el partit fins i tot sense l’autorització espanyola. El gest del govern és vist com una provocació per part de les autoritats espanyoles.
Ara la responsabilitat recau en els directius esportius catalans i, sobretot, en els propis esportistes.
La Federació nord-americana de Futbol, a través del seu Secretari General, Dan Flynn, ha enviat una carta a la Federació Espanyola (RFEF) demanant que permetin jugar el partit amistós contra la selecció de Catalunya. Els USA recorden que altres federacions ja s’han enfrontat a l’equip català en altres ocasions. Segons manifesten els federatius americans a través de la missiva, les negociacions amb la Federació Catalana de Futbol (FCF) van finalitzar al maig, després d'assegurar-se que la selecció d'Espanya no jugava el mateix dia. La Federació dels USA de Futbol considera a més que, en cas que el partit se suspengui, es perjudicarien els seus interessos, en tenir signat un contracte de televisió, els acords de patrocini i les reserves de vol, ja que la cita està anunciada des de fa mesos (“Not approving this match puts our Association in an extremely difficult position as we have a television contract to stage the match, sponsor obligations and expenses already incurred for aifare and other items in preparation for the match”... “the proposed cancellation of this match will result in a significant financial hardship to U.S.Soccer and a source of unwarranted embarrassment to our Association with our fans, broadcasters and sponsors”, ha dit Dan Flynn, C.E.O./Secretary General, U.S.Soccer Federation.
Per la seva banda, la Federació Catalana de Futbol (FCF) ha demanat avui per escrit al Tribunal Català de l'Esport (TCE) que autoritzi el partit. La FCF confia obtenir el suport del TCE, perquè considera que sent l'"òrgan suprem jurisdiccional esportiu de Catalunya, és competent en aquest assumpte".
El Govern català ha instat la FCF a celebrar el partit, independentment de si compta amb el vistiplau de la Real Federació Espanyola de Futbol o no.
La Unió de Federacions Esportives de Catalunya (UFEC) ha forçat la situació manifestant que "només el Ministeri d'Afers Exteriors podria impedir el partit atenent a raons polítiques", convertint la controvèrsia en un afer de política internacional. La UFEC, a qui d'acord amb la legislació vigent li correspon el foment exterior de les seleccions catalanes així com la promoció d'aquelles activitats que permetin la projecció exterior de Catalunya com a país esportiu, ha fet un estudi de les normes aplicables al conflicte creat per la postura de la Reial Federació Espanyola de Futbol (RFEF) i ha determinat que la Federació Catalana de Futbol (FCF) no necessita cap autorització.
El conseller d'Interior, Relacions Institucionals i Participació del govern català, Joan Saura, ha confirmat que la recomanació de jugar el Catalunya-USA encara que sigui sense autorització de la Federació Espanyola de Futbol (FEF), és també "l'opinió del Govern".
El vicepresident del govern català, Josep-Lluís Carod-Rovira, ha manifestat estar en contra de la "voluntat intolerable de politització de l'esport que està fent la Federació Espanyola de Futbol" i també ha manifestat que “Els jugadors catalans i americans han d'actuar amb llibertat i plena sobirania", i ha afegit que "És preocupant que Espanya estigui en contra de l'esport català i també de l'amistat entre països i seleccions nacionals".
Pel que fa als ciutadans catalans, fins i tot aquells que no som seguidors dels encontres de futbol desitgem que el partit es pugui celebrar tranquil•lament i en pau, a Barcelona, el proper dia 14 d’octubre del 2007, i que sigui una celebració on s’agermanin la bandera catalana i dels USA, i també, per què no, la Ikurrinya d’Euskadi i la bandera de Scotland.

The Spanish Federation of Soccer has decided to veto the foreseen friendly match among the selections of Catalan Soccer and of the United States for the next 2007, October the 14th. Its managers have appealed to an incompatibility -false- with the calendars of the FIFA.
The new has provoked a deep unrest in Catalonia, because it seems to obey exclusively to a mean prohibition without foundations destined just to not allowing any national expression of Catalonia. Already it is known: Spain considers that the Catalan Nation does not exist, that it has never existed and they will never allow that it exists.
The newspapers of Madrid speak obviously against the match, and strongly require to the spanish sport authorities to avoid it. It is well known that the majority of sportsmen of elite in Spain have Catalan origin. But the government of Madrid not just forbids the existence of Catalan national teams, but also forces to the players to play with the Spanish sport selections (even against the will of the player) under the threat to withdraw the permission of to continue to play and to finish his sport career. This is to politicize the sport.
Still more grotesque is the consideration of the spanish sport authorities because this match has no international rellevance, but it is just a friendly match, like so many other that are celebrated in several points of the world.
The Spanish authorities have demonstrated a great zeal avoiding the international recognition of the Catalan teams or of the Catalan players (example: Gasol). Now, the USA-Catalonia veto makes evident the severe obstacles that the Catalan sport has to face when it intends to obtain an external projection.

The North American Federation of Soccer, through its General Secretary, Dan Flynn, has sent a letter to the Spanish Federation (RFEF) asking them to allow to play the friendly match. The North American Federation of Soccer remember to the RFEF that other federations had already faced the Catalan team on other occasions. As they manifest the American federative ones through the missive, the negotiations with the Catalan Federation of Football (FCF) finished in May 2007, after checking that the selection of Spain did not play the same day. The Federation of the USA of Soccer considers moreover that, in case the match is suspended, its interests would be prejudiced, on having a contract of television, the agreements of sponsorship and the flight bookings signed, since the appointment is announced some months ago ((“Not approving this match puts our Association in an extremely difficult position as we have a television contract to stage the match, sponsor obligations and expenses already incurred for aifare and other items in preparation for the match”... “the proposed cancellation of this match will result in a significant financial hardship to U.S.Soccer and a source of unwarranted embarrassment to our Association with our fans, broadcasters and sponsors”, said Dan Flynn, C.E.O./Secretary General, U.S.Soccer Federation.
The Catalan Federation of Soccer (FCF) has asked the Catalan Court of the Sport (TCE) to authorize the match. The FCF trusts to obtain the support from the TCE, because it considers that being the "jurisdictional supreme" sport "organ of Catalonia, it is competent in this matter.
The Catalan Government has urged the FCF to celebrate the match, independently of the approval or not of the Spanish Federation of Soccer.
The Union of Sport Federations of Catalonia (UFEC) has forced the situation manifesting that "only the Ministry of Foreign Affairs might block the match paying attention to political reasons", converting the controversy into an affair of international politics. The UFEC, to whom in accordance with the valid legislation corresponds the outer promotion of the Catalan sport selections, has made a study of the rules applicable to the conflict created by the posture of the Spanish Federation of Football (RFEF) and it has determined that the Catalan Federation of Football (FCF) does not need any authorization.
The counselor of Inland, Institutional Relationships and Participation of the Catalan government, Joan Saura, has confirmed the recommendation of the catalan government to playing the Catalonia-USA match even without the authorization of the Spanish Federation of Football (FEF).
The vice-president of the Catalan government, Josep-Lluís Carod-Rovira, has manifested to be against the "intolerable will of politization of the sport that is making the Spanish Federation of Soccer" and has also manifested that "The Catalan and American players have to perform with freedom and full sovereignty", and that "it is worrisome that Spain is against the Catalan sport and also of the friendship between countries and national sport selections".
Regarding the Catalan citizens - even those that are notsupporters of the soccer encounters - wish that the match can be celebrated calmly and in peace, in Barcelona, on the next 2007, October the 14th, and that the Catalan flag and that of the USA could be shown as twins, next to also the Basque Ikurrinya and the Scotland’s flag.
